How to Narrow Your Target Market |
When you're starting out, trying to be all things to all people is a sure way to fail. Here's how to stay focused.
Huge, profitable companies like Walmart and Amazon didn't start as the all-encompassing retailers we know today. Each debuted with a very specific focus that helped them find and nurture a strong customer base. Walmart originally catered to shoppers in rural areas where there was a dearth of options for low-cost goods; Amazon famously limited itself to just books for years before expanding into selling everything from DVDs to motorcycle gear.

5 (Other) Reasons Small Businesses Fail |
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- There are many reasons why startups never get to reap the riches of a Google (GOOG_), Amazon (AMZN_), Chipotle (CMG_) or Starbucks (SBUX_).
An estimated 627,200 companies big enough to hire began operations in 2008, and 595,600 closed the same year, according to data collected by the Small Business Administration. This amounts to an annual turnover of about 10%. Companies without employees have turnover rates three times as high, mostly because they're easier to start and shut down.

The Ultimate Customer Experience |
Luxury retail is a tough game-only made tougher over the last two years. Perhaps one of the only things tougher is being a manufacturer who continues to manufacture in the U.S. Now combine the two and you have the ultimate challenge.
One company, Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers, has been able to navigate these challenges. While not large, Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers is a true multi-channel retailer, operating six retail locations in metropolitan cities, a multi-functional Web site, as well as a robust catalog program to cater to its high-end client base.
